EYE EXAMINATION

We give one of the most thorough eye exams you'll find, in fact, most people say it's the most thorough they've ever had. Plan to be in the office about an hour, or longer if you plan to take much time to choose glasses. We utilize state-of -the art equipment combined with good old-fashioned personalized care to make sure we address your needs. You will not be rushed through your exam. And the doctor always makes sure you get a chance to ask questions at the end. That's just one of the things that makes us different! ... hence the slogan - Clearly, our focus is on you! We pride ourselves on the extra time we take with our patients, not only during your time with the doctor, but also with the rest of the staff.

During the examination we'll test for numerous things, which may include, but may not be limited to any or all of the following:

  • Digital Retinal Photography
  • Best corrected and uncorrected visual acuity at distance and near
  • Eye Alignment and Binocularity (Lazy eyes or eye turns)
  • Computerized lens analysis of current prescription
  • Neurological functions
  • Depth Perception (stereopsis)
  • Color Vision abnormalities
  • Visual Fields
  • Corneal Topography
  • Refraction to determine your best prescription
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Retinal holes or detachments
  • Systemic diseases that may cause vision problems:
  • Diabetes, High blood pressure, arthritis, etc.
  • Any other ocular disease

A thorough interview will be taken to determine any pertinent history before the examination begins, and the doctor will test for many if not all of the above things. He will then dilate most adults, to insure that a good view of all internal structures is made. (See FAQ: Why do I need my eyes dilated) At the end of the examination, the doctor will review his findings and discuss your options in detail. He will always give you time to answer any questions at the end.

An eye drop will be put in each eye which will open up the pupils to allow this good view. This is called dilating the eyes, and typically lasts about 4 to 6 hours. During this time, lights will be bright, and near vision may be significantly impaired. Be prepared to deal with these situations after your exam. Bring your sunglasses with you, or we will supply a disposable pair to you if needed. If you wear contact lenses, please wear them into the office at least 4 hours before your appointment.

WE OFFER STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT FOR MAXIMUM ACCURACY AND COMFORT

  • Humphrey Corneal Topography System

This new computerized photographic instrument surveys the cornea and provides a detailed topographical "map" of its shape. If you are considering new contact lenses or thinking about refractive surgery, this information is vitally important. This system is a major advancement in corneal analysis. This system can detect slight conditions often invisible to even the most thorough conventional testing and aids the doctor in properly prescribing glasses as well. The system also helps Dr. Vosseteig to monitor subtle changes on your cornea over time. Until now, instruments used for measuring the curvature of the cornea were only able to measure a small area near the center of the cornea. Contact lenses and refractive surgery, on the other hand, involve a much larger area of the cornea. This system measures a wide area of the cornea utilizing data from almost 8000 points. Colors are used to create a model of the cornea that Dr. Vosseteig will use to provide you with the very best eye care services possible.

  • Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer

A new highly sophisticated instrument now allows us to provide a more thorough medical analysis of your eyes. Our new Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer is one of the most advanced instruments developed for the eye-care field. It electronically measures Retinal Function and Optic Nerve Pathways for areas of diminished sensitivity to light in the central and peripheral (side vision) areas.

The instrument can assist in the early detection of many disorders, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, optic neuritis, and neurological conditions including brain tumors. These conditions affect a person's vision in ways one may not notice until the disease has become severe, and in some cases, may be the only effective way of detecting these problems, if they exist. We are pleased to offer this testing in our advanced office.

  • Computerized Auto-refractor/keratometer

This instrument allows immediate determination and verification of the patient prescription. The results are accurate and fast every time, even with children, elderly and non-verbal patients.

  • Digital Ocular Imaging

This technology allows a very high resolution photograph to be taken of the inside of the patient's eyes to insure good eye health. This becomes a permanent part of the patient record, allowing us to compare present eye health to previous visits. This instrument allows us to detect the early onset of certain ocular and systemic diseases - such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

  • Tonometer

Do you hate the "puff of air" test? Don't worry, we the latest techonology in this kind of testing - a Canon TX-10 Tonometer. It uses 4 times less pressure than previous generations for a much more comfortable and accurate test.

This test is used to help determine if you have glaucoma.

  •  Computerized Lens Analyzer

This instrument is used to make accurate readings of previous and new glasses prescriptions in a matter of a few seconds. This valuable tool insures your glasses are made to the precise prescription asked for by the doctor. It also allows our staff feedback and notification of special situations, such as lens distortions, undetectable by other means.
